Where We’re Going

Gilbert White’s House & Gardens is the former home of Gilbert White, one of England’s most famous naturalists and the author of “The Natural History of Selborne”. This beautiful 18th-century house and its stunning gardens offer a unique blend of natural history, local heritage and hands-on learning.

What Your Child Will Experience

This exciting day out will help your child:

  • Explore beautiful gardens and grounds – discovering different habitats, observing wildlife, and learning about the plants and animals that Gilbert White studied over 250 years ago
  • Become nature detectives – using observation skills to identify birds, insects and plants, just as Gilbert White did in his pioneering work
  • Step back in time – exploring the historic house and learning about life in the 18th century, and how people studied nature before modern technology
  • Take part in hands-on activities – engaging in practical workshops that bring science, history and nature to life in creative and memorable ways
  • Learn about local wildlife – understanding how to care for our environment and the importance of protecting British wildlife and habitats

  • Packed lunch (no glass bottles or nuts, please)
  • Water bottle
  • Coat suitable for the weather (we’ll be spending time outdoors in the gardens)
  • Comfortable shoes suitable for walking (the grounds can be uneven)
